Hey guys! Echad has found a rather interesting program that can help you modify textures in your Dreamcast games. It's been said that it can work for all DC games, so if that's the case think of the possibilities (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Here's Echad's tutorial word for word:

TexMod should work for ALL Direct X 9 applications - I tried it in nullDC: it has a mod structure which enables you to preview all the texture edits without changing the original CD image... I used tried it with Soul Calibur and not only I was able to change the image files, but also double the resolution for better quality of the edit in emulator. =) While it doesn't allow to insert the texture on cd, it does provide its' hex adress, so you can eventually work it out.

Here's my translation of the http://rulezzgames.mybb.ru/ Mortal Kombat Gold tutorial - most of the words are from original author, my remarks are crimson:

SAUCE: http://rulezzgames.mybb.ru/viewtopic.php?id=149 =P

I have cracked the Mortal Kombat GOLD textures with the TexMod program (it was originally used for Tomb Raider Anniversary skins editing) ed. note: God bless Nude Raider hacks and people who released such wonderful programs for it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tumbleweed.gif)
You can download it here. ed. note: or just Google for that matter. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

To rip the textures from the game with it you need to press where the numbers are in pix:

(IMG:http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/5593/tut1lz5.jpg)

1) Open file "nullDC_100b1_6.exe" (without quotation marks) ed. note: No, I haven't tried it with other emulator yet - only with Tomb Raider. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)
2) Select here.
3) Uncheck there.
4) Press "Run" - game will run. ed. note: It didn't sound so stupid in Russian. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Now you need to press [+] or [-] (at the right of keyboard ed. note: He meant numpad! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif) ) to search for a required texture (at this time they will pop up in the upper-left corner of the screen). If the texture is present on the screen, it will flash with green colour: ed. note: Actually - not flash, but fill... It did it perfectly in TRA, but on my nullDC I've seen only a green tint of the model, without any popup at the upper-left of the screen. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

(IMG:http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/2559/nulldc100b162008dx6.jpg)

You need to press [Enter] to save a texture - they are saved in the "Out" folder. ed. note: Actually - it is configurable. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
Now - change them however you wish; it is also possible to insert the textures from other games (cracked with this or other program) with Paint or Photoshop - after changing the textures you'll need to create a mod file, for it you need to: ed. note: Well, this will work only for the emulator - but you can try your own method of inserting the texture after you edit and convert it to .pvr with Photoshop; also - the name of the texture is correspondent with its' hex adress, so you have better chances of finding it in packs... And lastly - a fast preview with an emulator is really worth it; saves both time and CDRs. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

(IMG:http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/1096/tut2pw2.jpg)

5) Select this.
6) Open file "TexMod.log" ed. note: It holds all the texture adresses - you can backup some of them, and comment out (or just delete) the appropriate strings from this file, allowing you to put back only some ripped files.
7) Press "Build" - save (when the textures would be saved, instead of "Build Status" message you will see "Success! Textures added")

Mods are saved with the .tpf extension - here's how to load them:

(IMG:http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4118/tut3cz4.jpg)

8) Open the mod.
9) Press "Run" - the game will launch with your new textures.

ed. note: Tutorial over - all the latter information in original post was about the author's own MKG mod.

~~~~
And there you have it! Try it out and see if it works for you! Post screenshots if you get some mods going! Have fun! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
only thing u can really mod in a full game is Music Text and Textures.. you might be able to change other things like... how much health damage... and maybe... just maybe... if it has a spawn system u could change what characters appear in that area... but i dont think u can push it any farther than that... and still suffer from the File size issue.... unless you can modify the boot files... If im wrong... that would be awesome cause then that means we could make a whole DC game just by modifying it...
But with what i have seen in the past... most we can change is the Look and the way the story reads and sounds...
Could be possible to make it look like Sonic adventures takes place on another planet... with some sorta space fish chasing u LOL that would be cool...
Hi all... As I said, it worked with Soul Calibur for me.
Some games actually can be modified completely - depending on the platform, encryption, and user efforts... There are some hacks for console (Sega Mega Drive version) Ultimate Mortal Kombat which put in a lot of new things (characters, arenas, fatalities), but were playable only via the emulator due to size issues, as well as lack of ability to easily burn a cartridge.
Virtually, everything can be emulated, and edited as well... And the main stuff here is the human factor - for example, the Playstation 2 Emulation is far ahead of the X-Box one, even though the latter should be similar to PC. The interesting thing here is that the X-Box games modding/editing is far beyond the current level of their emulation, at least comparing to PS2... So it's really up to the crackers, coders, researchers and enthusiasts to figure everything out. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
About saving on a disc - yeah, it sometimes can be an issue... My Tekken 3 (PSX) texture edit tryouts failed to work at all (game just didn't run) if I saved the CD-Image with MagicISO, but ran, although with no .XA music as long as I did it with UltraISO. Weird, and depends on parameters as well.
Putting some higher rez textures on some of the crappier looking games that are still fun might be worth it.
All right I'm new here but this is just the forum I've been looking for. I'm in. I've known about the nulldc texmod for a while. I am currently working on Sonic Adventure Cel. Hopefully other people will join in and start creating mods.
You know, I'm an amateur artist that might be coming up on some free time. I usually just do environment models but I've been trying to brush up on my texturing to be honest. Sonic Adventure with cel shading sounds... well pretty wibbledopoop awesome. If you've got the textures ripped, upload me a rar or something and I'll see what I can do yeah?
No method i use seems to work on booting quake 3, even without texmods. I Think i'm injecting the music wrong, They have their own \Track on CD. What method would you suggest?
